On the weekend of 21st and 22nd August Quota International of Rotorua ran the fifteenth National Mahjong Tournament for the sixth successive year. Once again it was a highly successful event with eighty four participants coming from all over the North Island. At the request of the players, at the conclusion of last years tournament, play was extended this year to eleven hours. Six on Saturday and five on Sunday. This worked exceeding well and in the event kept the twenty six club members busy with either administrative or catering jobs. It was truly a case of ‘Many hands make light work’. At the conclusion of play on Saturday players sat down to a ‘happy hour’ during which time they displayed medallions that they had been asked to make depicting mahjong hands. These, as in the past, were innovative and colourful. The winner of the tournament was Pat New from the nearby town of Tauranga, the runner-up was a local player Pam Greenson . Both players are good friends and long time supporters of the tournament and finished with very high scores. Quota International of Rotorua are deservedly pleased with the way the tournament ran and will be happy to donate the proceeds to the local hospice and to Arthritis New Zealand. Sheryl Jensen of Arthritis New Zealand and Sharron Black CEO of Hospice Rotorua were guests at Rotorua's September dinner night. The money was raised at our recent Mahjong tournament which made over $4,000.
